The suggestions that I try to convey in the Office Chic series is about wonderful, stylish, classic items that are truly timeless. They always stand the test of time. Whenever you make a purchase in a good quality item, it will last you for 10 years, 20 years, more, because they really do stay in style. The investment will always repay itself.
If you are just beginning to develop a professional wardrobe, the sheath dress is, by far, a stellar first choice. It is so easy to accessorize and just throw a blazer over it along with classic heels and you’re done. It could very well be the one item of clothing that will always garner compliments and project a professional image.
Sometimes more is just… More.
The sheath dress is so easy to find. You can find them in the high end stores, as well as stores that carry primarily trendy outfits. You can find them in vintage stores, as well as second hand stores if you really dig around.
The sheath dress does double-duty by going from the office during the day to a nice dinner in the evening. It can also take you to formal events. To change up how formal or casual you want to project your sheath dress is in your accessory and shoe selection.
Another advantage of the sheath dress is it works on many different shapes and sizes. The classic black dress, also known as the “little black dress,” is slimming and, depending on the cut, has the capacity to hide our little figure flaws.
So flattering.
Tell me what you think and offer your suggestions and input. Do you find the sheath dress as one of your favorite and easy get to dresses in a pinch? Where do you like shopping for your perfect classic professional pieces? I would love to hear from you.
I have to agree about the sheath dress. I also like to pair it with a cardigan and a belt.
Very stylish Ly. Appreciate the input. I never thought about a cardigan, but that would be perfect around the office for warmth and comfort since the sheath dress is generally sleeveless in most cases. I always take my blazer off when I’m in the office because it tends to be a bit restricting when working on the computer.
Thanks for the style tip!

Your article is great. I’ve always favoured the sheath dress for office wear. I think it looks chic, smart and gives one a professional look. I don’t think you can go wrong with it. I don’t have a favourite place for shopping. I’m not inclined to shop that often but when I do I go everywhere looking for that perfect dress. These days shops carry similar merchandise unfortunately. I used to love going to boutiques but these are rare these days.
Hi Patricia. Love vintage! But, yes, it is tough to find a really fabulous vintage store where I’m at. I don’t live in L.A. So I tend to get discounts whenever I come across a store that is having a sale. Just the other day a girlfriend and I each picked up a pair of $60 boots for $30. Can’t beat that!
Thank you for the kudos. I appreciate your input and suggestions.

I’m a VA and work from home. It’s great — I grab my coffee as I stumble out of bed, turn my computer on, and get to emails. I go grab my second cup of awesome coffee, walk my dog, and come back to my computer. Yikes — did I mention I’m still in PJs?
But it is heavenly to dress up now and then. Office chic should never be passe for us who work in our home offices. We should always portray ourselves beautifully and professionally when we attend networking events or the like. I for one love this sheath dress. I WANT IT! It is fabulous. Let us be chic, professional, and absolutely fabulous as we portray our businesses. I love this!
And this dress really can be found anywhere, as you said. We can all find the right one for our own bodies. The Dress Barn is a great place to check out as well — and you don’t have to use up your month’s salary to buy the dress either!
Great post, and I am now a follower
